Are you or someone in your family suffering from flashbacks, nightmares, bad memories or needing a drink to cope with activities you used to take in your stride? If you are then you may be suffering from
the symptoms of trauma.
Few people realise that trauma and psychological injury can be more devastating than physical injury.
Traumatic events can come in many varying forms, for example:
burglary
sexual assault
being bullied at work
domestic violence or even
medical emergencies
They strike unexpectedly, turning everyday experiences upside-down and destroying the belief that "It couldnever happen to
me".
Among adults, the average 25 year old is up to five times more likely to be depressed than 50 years ago. Adults are 28 times more likely to have been the victims of violent crime than in
1953.
Untreated, the effects of trauma and the psychological condition - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD for short - can last a lifetime, impairing health, damaging relationships and preventing people from achieving their
potential.
Sufferers often find that effective knowledge and treatment of PTSD is hard to find. But prospects for recovery are positive when you have the right
treatment.
