Trauma

Red Poppy Rape and Sexual Abuse
Rape, sexual abuse, and sexual assault all cause psychological trauma injury and can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These injuries if sustained in childhood and left untreated, will last a lifetime. If sustained as an adult and left untreated, the traumatic effects will remain throughout the remainder of the victim’s life.

Rape and sexual abuse takes place far more often than official police statistics suggest.

Rape Crisis reports that there is no known study on the prevalence of rape in the UK. However it is estimated that 1 in 4 women suffer rape or attempted rape - most of them by someone they know in some capacity.

For the victims of sexual harassment, sexual abuse or rape the effects can be devastating and long lasting.

Every victim will deal with their experiences in their own way. However there are some reactions that are quite common including:

flower Guilt
flower The need to talk about the experience, repeatedly
flower Regularly crying - this can happen for months after the experience
flower Anger
flower Denial

Such is the impact of this type of event that the victim’s capability to lead a normal life - both from a social and work perspective - is significantly damaged.

A woman may find it difficult if not impossible to maintain or develop a physical relationship with a man as a result of her experiences. Many victims attempt suicide and struggle with psychological and emotional difficulties for the remainder of their life.

The long term effects of sexual abuse - whether suffered as a child or adult - are extremely damaging and often cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or trauma symptoms. (See What is trauma and the Effects of Trauma)

Whilst the event itself or the memory of the event cannot be taken away, much of the suffering can be alleviated.

The Red Poppy Company can help the victims of sexual harassment, abuse and rape move on with their lives - both social and professional - in a positive way, using a range of trauma management services. (See the Case Studies page)
